Enlarged Prostate (BPH)
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy, is a benign enlargement of the prostate gland among middle-aged or older men. Since the prostate encircles the urethra, with time, the growing prostate exerts pressure on the urinary tract and blocks the usual passage of urine from the bladder.
The people who are suffering from BPH usually have symptoms related to lower urinary tract syndrome (LUTS) which make their lives extremely troublesome. These symptoms can be such that the person has difficulty in passing urine due to a weak urinary stream, post-micturition dribbling, urge to pass urine, and frequent visits to the toilet, especially during night time (Nocturia).
The treatment for BPH is dependent upon the severity of symptoms and size of the prostate gland. In case of mild symptoms, specific changes in the lifestyle and active surveillance can help. In case of moderate symptoms, Dr. Naveen Kumar Agarwal advises using advanced medical techniques for treatment of the problem such as alpha-blockers which relax the muscles of the bladder neck and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors that help reduce the size of the prostate. In cases where medicines do not work, we use advanced, minimally invasive surgeries and procedures such as Transurethral Resection of the Prostate and laser surgery to remove the prostate tissue.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men across the globe. The cancer is formed from cells of the prostate that develop and multiply abnormally forming lumps. The cancer does not present any symptoms and causes no pain until it has developed to an advanced stage. Some of the symptoms associated with the cancer at an advanced stage are presence of blood in the urine and semen, inexplicable pain in the bones, pelvic region and sudden loss of erectile function.
Since early intervention is known to significantly increase chances of survival, regular screening becomes the best protection against development of aggressive cancer. At our specialized urology unit, Dr. Agarwal ensures that early detection of the condition is possible through regular screening and extremely accurate diagnostic procedures. Our clinic performs routine tests for PSA in the blood along with DREs for detection of the subtle problems without presenting any symptoms. In cases where there is any suspicion, TRUS and prostate biopsies are performed.

Prostate Infection
Infections of the prostate are referred to as prostatitis. This entails the inflammation of the prostate gland either acutely or chronically. Prostatitis differs from conditions like BPH and prostate cancer in that while these are mainly associated with older men, prostatitis is common among young and middle aged men. Prostatitis has two main types: acute bacterial prostatitis, characterized by acute onset of infection of the urinary tract; and chronic prostatitis, which includes the recurrence of pelvic pain which could be due to or without bacteria. Patients with acute prostatitis may have to endure a number of symptoms.
These include fever, chills, body pains similar to those in the flu, pain and burning while passing urine, inability to pass urine fully, and sharp pains in the pelvis, genitals, and lower back. In chronic cases, patients have recurring dull pains in their pelvic area along with frequent urination and painful ejaculation.Dr. Naveen Kumar Agarwal is able to identify the difference between bacterial and non-bacterial prostatitis quickly in order to prevent it from becoming a chronic one. This is done through urine culture, prostatic fluid analysis and blood panel testing.
In the case of bacterial infections, there is aggressive therapy using customized regimens of antibiotics either orally or intravenously so that the bacterium can be completely eliminated from the body. If not a bacterial infection, and in cases of pelvic pain that are chronic or non-bacterial in nature, Dr. Agarwal offers a holistic management program that includes anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants among other things.
